Rifampicin is a broad spectrum antibiotic that is also effective against some virus strains. Rifampicin works by inhibiting RNA polymerase. It is a useful tool in transfection protocols because it can prevent host DNA synthesis while allowing the recombinant genes to be expressed.

Rifampicin is commercially known as an effective treatment for Tuberculosis, however has gained recent popularity for its ability to treat infections on the surface of prosthetic devices.
